The best places to view the Northern Lights

Seeing the Aurora Borealis, or the Northern Lights, is a rare and strikingly beautiful experience. Caused by charged particles colliding with atoms in the air due to solar wind, certain areas in the extreme north are treated to a glorious show of light and colour that overpowers the night sky.

The Northern Lights can only be seen on clear nights in just a few locations. But if you are really keen to see them, here are a few places where you have the best luck of seeing this mysterious atmospheric occurrence.

Though it’s possible to see the Northern Lights in all of Scandinavia, the northern coast of Norway is your best bet. This area boasts clear night skies and dry, frigid air, as well as few cities to create light pollution. Therefore, you can explore the northern tundra of Lapland and make your way to Nordkapp, billed as the northernmost point in Europe, where you can also see the midnight sun during the summer months.

Iceland may well be the most relaxing place to view the Northern Lights. While you’re waiting, have a nice long soak in a geo-thermally heated hot tub at the one of the island’s many five-star spa hotels.

If you make it as far north as Russia’s isolated Kola Peninsula, you stand the best chance of seeing the Northern Lights dance across the sky. You may also be lucky enough to see a herd of reindeer galloping across the tundra.

Even for adventurous travelers, Greenland is truly one of the least-explored places on Earth. Much of the island is uninhabited, which cuts down on the light pollution and keeps the sky clear so you can see the Northern Lights. Here you can also see fjords, glaciers, icebergs and even a polar bear or two.

Make It Happen

Though it is rare to see the Northern Lights, it is a stunning, once-in-a-lifetime experience. If you are keen to take a trip northward to see them, then you can fund your trip through a variety of ways to earn money. For example, you can try to set a budget each week leading up to your Arctic adventure. Consider picking up some extra shifts or freelance work. Or, you can sell your extra clutter online. Just enter sell ipad into one of the many online second hand sites and see what happens. Finally, you can try money-saving tricks like shopping generic or buying in bulk.

So what are you waiting for? Book your trip northward this winter and don’t miss the stunning Northern Lights!
