Melbourne Laneways and Funky, Fun Boutiques, Bars, and More

Having lived in Melbourne for a few months last year I thought I would write about some of the cool things you can do in the CBD area.

Melbourne is a city alive and abuzz with activity. Shopping, dining, and drinking make this a place to go for a day of fun and relaxation, or to let your hair down and let loose. From its fashionable boutiques to its hole-in-the-wall cafes, Melbourne caters to a range of tastes, even if you don’t have any.

Shopping in Melbourne

There’s plenty to like about the eclectic choices you’ll find to satisfy even the most discerning shopper. If keeping up with fashion is your thing, head to Bridge Road in Richmond where you’ll find numerous fashion factory outlets to dazzle you. Here you’ll find designer clothes, shoes, and accessories for as much as one-third their original cost. You can be a fashion diva and keep your savings hush-hush while your friends drool over your new wardrobe.

If you like vintage and exclusive designs, then be sure to check out Mazi. Each piece accentuates a woman’s playful and sensual side and bears the proud label “Made in Melbourne.” Each piece is also produced in limited numbers, so you’re not likely to see your best friend or a stranger wearing the same garment.

If you like to dive into some chaotic shopping and are a master at haggling, then the Queen Victoria Market is for you. From fresh produce and meats to home goods, trinkets, and clothing, you’ll find plenty to keep you happily shopping for hours. The people are friendly and its open market appeal makes it one of the most popular markets in Australia.

Dining in Melbourne

After all that exhausting shopping, you’ll need to reward yourself with some good food, drinks, and atmosphere. Take in some of the lesser-known bars that may require a little detective work to find, but they’ll be well worth the effort. Described as “hidden laneway bars” many are rather rundown and the decor somewhat strange, but that’s what makes them so fascinating. The Order of Melbourne bar is one of the fun haunts where you’ll find funky is cool.

For a more Bohemian experience, check out the Cherry Bar. This one may take a little sleuthing to find, a treasure hidden in alleyways of yesterday’s garbage. Enjoy live rock bands on the weekends and groove to some soul music on Thursday nights. The bar is located on ACDC Lane where you’ll find some cool graffiti art on the alley walls. How could you resist?

If you’re looking for something a little more cozy and upscale, you’ll want to indulge yourself at the Melbourne Supper Club. With an impressive and long wine list, a humidor, and endless cocktails you can enjoy in the luxury of leather couches and armchairs, it has the feel of an exclusive club for the privileged few. For appetizers or a meal, the menu is full of mouth-watering dishes. Wines range from very affordable to several thousand dollars, so if you’re looking to impress, you won’t go wrong here.

More Shopping in Melbourne

It must be mentioned here that your shopping experience just isn’t complete without visiting Brunswick Street for its wonderful array of funky boutiques. In the Bohemian suburb of Fitzroy you’ll marvel at the second-hand stores and upscale shops that sit side-by-side. There’s nothing pretentious here. Shop vintage and designer boutiques all in one area, and don’t forget to duck into a lovely cafe for a latte or get lively at one of the clubs and bars with a festive air.

No one said shopping had to be boring, and Melbourne is proof positive that shopping here is more of an art form with a lot fun sprinkled on top.
