Mediterranean Cruises Departing from Southampton

Southampton is the largest and busiest port of call for cruise ships in the United Kingdom. More cruise ships leave from Southampton than most of the other ports combined. The ill-fated Titanic set sail from this port. Now it is the launching point for most people’s ocean vacations.

If you are planning a Mediterranean cruise, you will probably leave from Southampton. You will have a lot more options to choose from when it comes to destinations, route and the length of your cruise. The hardest part of your Mediterranean cruise may be deciding which cruise to take. You can find a cruise you like no matter how large your budget is, how much vacation time you have or where you wish to go.

All of the major cruise lines offer Mediterranean cruises which depart from Southampton, including Royal Caribbean International, MSC Cruises, Cunard Cruises, P&O Cruises, Fred Olsen Cruise Lines and Princess Cruises. Most Mediterranean cruises last anywhere from seven to 10 days, but there are also a number that last as long as three weeks.

The most common destinations are in France, Spain and Portugal. The cruises that focus on France and Spain tend to visit ports such as Cherborg, Vivo and Bilboa. Some will also give you a lift to Paris to do some sightseeing in the City of Light. Cruises which focus on Spain and Portugal tend to call at ports like Lisbon, Gibraltar and La Coruna. These cruises typically last about a week.

Slightly longer cruises from Southampton often focus on the Atlantic coast. They last for about 10 days and visit ports such as Lisbon, Casablanca, Cadiz and Oporto. You can also take nine or 10 day cruises that will take you into the heart of the Mediterranean and see cities like Monte Carlo, Barcelona and Civitavecchia. These latter cruises are not long enough to return to Southampton by boat, however, so you will need to fly back to the UK.

A two week cruise will let you explore all of the major ports in the Western Mediterranean. You will stop at ports such as Barcelona, Civitavecchia, Cannes, Palma de Mallorca, Malaga, Vigo, Seville, Florence, Naples, Alicante, Rome and Elba. There are many of these cruises, and you can usually tailor them to your interests. Do you want to focus on the famous Italian ports? There is a cruise specifically for that. Do you want to explore Greece and Sardinia? There is a cruise for that as well.

You can also choose a cruise that only visits the islands of the Mediterranean, or one that only calls on ports in the French and Spanish Riveras. Other cruises focus mostly on the Adriatic or Africa.

If you would rather spend your time in the Eastern Mediterranean, you are in luck, as there are cruises that focus on this area as well. These cruises are longer, however, and usually last anywhere from 17 to 21 days. Ports of call include Istanbul, Athens, Alexandria, Ashdod, Rhodes and Malta.
