Koln
Koln or Cologne is Germany’s forth largest city, and has more than ten million inhabitants. It is one of the oldest cities in Germany and was founded by the Romans in 38BC.
Lying on the River Rhine, the city is famous for the Cologne Cathedral which is the seat of the Catholic Archbishop of Cologne. This is well worth a visit as the stunning architecture and has been described by UNESCO as an ‘exceptional work of human creative genius’. It is visited by 20 thousand people every day.
The area is a major cultural centre and has an impressive arts scene and with over 30 museums and more than 100 galleries there are always exhibitions going on across the city whatever you might be looking for.
Through the year Koln is host to a variety of parades and carnivals including the Cologne Carnival, the Summerjam which is Europe’s biggest reggae festival and takes place in July each year, and Cologne Pride which is the largest gay and lesbian organised event in Germany and one of the biggest in Europe.
This is also a city with a nightlife. With more than 70 clubs and places to party, whether you’re into jazz, R&B, techno or anything else you’ll find something to suit you here. Failing that, you could just enjoy an evening out at one of the 3000 pubs, and restaurants the city has to offer. You can go in search of sushi or pizza and find it, or you could try a more typical German meal of Soorbrode (a beef dish), or Hammche (knuckle of pork).
Whatever you are seeking when you come to Koln, there is plenty for everyone, and if you’re not sure, a question to the local tourist board will often provide you with an answer whether you are looking to find a hotel with excellent views or a nightclub with wheelchair access.
