As far as luxury holidays go, few destinations can rouse the sense of glamour and far flung exoticism inherently associated with the Cook Islands.
Nestled in the glistening Pacific Ocean this self governing community consists of fifteen small islands spreads across an incredibly vast area of ocean, three times the size of France and separated into two coral groups; the Southern and Northern Islands. Naval captain James Cook named the Islands after a Lord of the Admiralty (a Mr. Hervey) but it was a Russian cartographer in the 1820s who attributed the group the name of the Cook Islands in honour of the maritime adventurer.
A mixture of coral atolls and volcanic outcrops, the islands today boast some of the last remaining true paradises on earth. Tourism is central to the economy here and from family holidays to honeymoons discerning travellers the world over arrive in this remote corner each year. The largest island and the hub of commercial activity is Rarotonga where the capital Avarua is also situated. The township boasts a selection of shops, restaurants and boutiques as well as a bustling open air Saturday market. A majority of the Cook Islands’ 20,000 residents are located in or around this main island although within a short drive from Avarua nature once again prevails and a sense of rugged wilderness is soon recaptured. The landscape of Rarotonga is dense and dramatic, rich soils burst forth with lush vegetation and colourful flora to produce a carpet of green rising up to the grand volcanic peaks that dominate the geography.
One of the most spectacular aspects of a holiday to the Cook Islands is in fact the experience of getting there. Many of the islands, Rarotonga and its sister Aitutaki in particular, are encompassed by spectacular blue lagoons which appear almost halo-like around the coastlines. Not only do these reefs provide a stunning panorama but they also protect the islands from strong Pacific tides meaning that the waters are perfect for all kinds of water sports including snorkelling and diving.
An hour’s flight from Rarotonga but still remaining in the southern coral group, Aitutaki is the second most frequented island in region and is renowned for its stunning beaches and unrivalled privacy. Nicknamed ‘The Honeymoon Island’, as you might imagine this is the ideal retreat for newlyweds or couples to escape from the stresses of the everyday and embrace the power of the striking surroundings.
Wherever you end up in the Cook Islands you can be sure of a warm and friendly welcome from the local people who despite a rather ferocious and proud ancestry are renowned for their hospitality and congeniality. There is plenty to keep even the most active traveller entertained during a stay in the Cook Islands though for many people the draw of the region is the invitation to do as little as possible. Cultural and heritage tours are a very popular attraction for many travellers who are privileged with a fascinating glimpse back into the history of this colourful people. A trip to the ‘lost village’ today the site of the Highland Paradise Cultural Centre is also encouraged where you can expect singing, dance, tribal tales and a delicious umu feast.
Numerous luxurious properties have been established across the archipelago to cater for a burgeoning tourist industry, from the understated chic of the Royal Takitumu Villas to the unreserved glamour of the ‘Rumours of Escape’. A range of bars restaurants, cafes and eateries also spread across many of the islands particularly Rarotonga and offer guests a real insight into Pacific Island cuisine although obviously the more remote areas of the region are somewhat limited in choice but no less in quality.
The Cook Islands offer a unique symmetry of brilliant vibrancy and intimate relaxation; a place that truly has something for everyone and where an open minded traveller can recapture a true sense of freedom and harmony.
