The year 2012 may be the best year ever to take a Grecian holiday. Despite the fact that neither tourist safety nor national security has been affected, the financial turmoil which has engulfed the country in recent months has driven away much of the tourist trade. This means that there are few crowds to plague a traveler. In addition, the financial problems have made it more inexpensive than ever to vacation in Greece.
Greece has always been famous for its scenic beauty, its wonderful Mediterranean climate, its fabulous food and its hospitality, and none of that has changed. Tourists are more welcome than ever. This makes 2012 the year for a Greek island holiday!
What is there to do in the land of Homer? To begin with, there is Athens. The home of the Acropolis is one of the oldest cities in the world and has a recorded history that goes back more than 3,400 years! It is the Greek capital and is home to numerous historical and archaeological attractions. It also has more theaters than any other city in the world and holds a six-month theater festival every year. There are also many places to shop and wonderful beaches.
Other major tourist destinations include Delphi, Olympia, Piraeus and Patras. Each of these cities has different attractions. Delphi draws visitors who want to see the Temple of Apollo and the Sanctuary of Athena. Olympia was home to the very first Olympic Games, and Piraeus is famous for its cuisine. Patras is one of the most beautiful cities in Greece and holds several festivals during the year, including the world-famous Patras Carnival.
The Greek countryside also has a number of attractions for the city-weary. The country is dotted with beautiful villages and tiny hamlets, all of which are glad to welcome foreign guests. Leaving the cities is a good way to become immersed in authentic Greek culture and to get know the Greek people.
Almost as many people visit Greece for its beaches as for its history. The lovely, enchanting waters of the Mediterranean are a huge draw, as are the sandy white beaches that hug the coastline. Most towns on the coast offer a full range of water sports. In addition, some of the best cuisine in the world is available in Greece. Every city, town and village has at least one or two good restaurants.
Every visitor can find accommodations that will suit their budget. Greece offers everything from luxury resorts to simple hostels, and everything in between. Many areas also have campgrounds, and tourists who are on a budget often choose to camp out. A number of high-quality bed-and-breakfasts establishments can be found throughout the country.
The Greek Isles are also available for visitors who want to try something different. The 1,400 islands off the coast include Crete, the Ionian Islands, the Cyclades and Dodecanese. All of the islands have their own attractions and hold many historical sites.
A holiday to Greece in 2012 may just be the vacation of a lifetime!
